First, let me give you my personal, positive, bias about this book. I have long-known about it and it is part of family legends on my father's side. I read it years ago and thought it well-written and historically interesting. Recently, my niece was doing a family tree on Ancestry, com. Her partner searched online and found the book in-print and available. I was pleasantly surprised and even more so when I found it in the Kindle bookstore, for free! Over the years, I have come across references in books about the Reformation and Martin Luther which involved this family. These were not detailed, but they did pop up now and then. The family name, von Cotta-Schonberg, which was used until my father's generation. We have traced it back to the mid 18th century from Denmark, where my dad was from, through various German locations. I have a copy of the family coat-of-arms which was established in Bohemia (now the Czech Republic). This crest belonged to the von Schonberg family. Here the author is correct. Cotta would be the family name in modern usage as it was the father's name. In the 15th century, "von" was prestigious and was put in front of a double-name. Cotta was described in one non-fiction book, as "a printer of Italian extraction". Printing and publishing was probably a family trade, as I found reference to Cottas in that business earlier than the period of the book, in or near Milan, Italy and later in Germany and in Denmark. As to the book itself. It is beautifully written, in a Victorian style. The author bids us to learn about an important period of history, as seen through thoughts of simple, honest people. She does great honor to my forebears.

Chronicles Of The Schönbergcotta Family Elizabeth Rundle Charles 9781173669065 Books Reviews
Excellent little book for the person interested in Martin Luther and his impact on his world. Although this is a work of fiction, it was very well researched and includes excellent historical facts that are often hard to come by in biographies of Luther and the Reformation. The book traces the lives of several young people growing to adulthood under the new spirit of the Gospel. In their individual chronicles (diaries) one can see the difference the Reformation made in everyday life.
