UK Top 50 Reviewer Bob wrote "This is the first 5* review I have given to a fiction book this year... In summary a great book if you like fast paced but thoughtful thrillers."
“THE MACHINE” is an adventure thriller which will thrill readers of Ludlum and Baldacci - a fast-moving tale of extraordinary characters, brutal action and a kaleidoscope of technology ideas which vividly twists its way through Hong Kong and China. All told in the unique voice of Ethan Stone – cool, laconic and intelligent.
Steven Semyonov is a 29 year-old tech billionaire. But that’s not why everyone wants to meet him. Billionaires, after all, are commonplace. Everyone want to meet Semyonov because he is the cleverest man alive.
So when Semyonov gives up his billions in California and defects to China, never to return, there must be a reason. That reason is something called The Machine.
Ethan Stone is ex-Special Forces, turned radical activist. He runs a whistle-blowing leaks web site called NotFutile.com. Has Stone stumbled upon Semyonov’s deadly secret? Stone flies to Hong Kong in pursuit, but the dark forces around Semyonov are ready for him, and he finds himself hunted for murder. He is forced to use every ounce of his cunning to survive, and his resolve to put violent Special Forces past behind him is tested to the limit. Stone enlists the help of a spiky Chinese dissident woman named Ying Ning, and travels deeper and deeper into China.to evade the sinister Public Security Bureau, track down the truth about Semyonov, and ultimately to find The Machine.
Deep beneath an ancient crater in the foothills of Tibet lies The Machine - the reason Semyonov gave up everything to come to China, the reason he gave away his billions. Only Semyonov’s not the only one who wants to find it.
"I can highly-recommend this book to readers who enjoy Jo Nesbo, Lee Child, Tom Clancy and Thomas Harris." - Simon Fairbanks
"Finally a thriller that's worthy of the name! Fantastic story line, complex characters and twists and turns that keep you hooked and wanting more.
I'd defy anyone to put down their kindle for more than a moment before fingers twitch and you come back, wanting to find out what happens next." - Kate Goodman
"I came away feeling educated and that's rare in an airport thriller novel." - Iain M. Grant
The next Ethan Stone Thriller entitled "The Noble Lie" is out on .

While Mr. Aston had a good idea, he failed in his execution. Too many irrelevant characters tossed into the mix in what I can on presume was an attempt to add interest actually did the opposite...IMO. Initially the story was fine, and I was keen on learning why this Stone character was driven to become the man he was, esp after having gone through so much, but in fact the further into the story line, the more the story seemed to lose cohesiveness and the author seemed to lose track of his own goal, leading the reader around on a wild goose chase and never getting anywhere.Lots of tangents and odd events were tossed into the storyline, along with info dumps and descriptions of what felt like irrelevant material. I really don't care about what someone ate while supposedly searching for someone or something...detailed descriptions of clothing or scenery that ends up being totally unrelated to anything is something that seems pretty common to a lot of books presently being published, and this author is very guilty of that...along with repeating the same information over and over and over again. Basically the main character already knew or suspected what was going on early in the book, but danced around the pages blindly chasing his tail like a hyperactive dog. There was no true resolution to the problem that I assumed was initially introduced...why was Stones friend (old army buddy) shot to death and the video sent to him? Stone knew who had killed him, and yes, it was to taunt him...but all of this happened in the very beginning and there was this silly cat and mouse game that only hinted at some unknown reason why a hired killer would even bother with such a thing.
Too many characters...too much fluff and nonsense that did not move the storyline along...too much irrelevant information...
If the writer had kept the characters to a minimum...kept his focus on the plot while still having the characters actually developed enough to move through the story, digest information in a cohesive manner, and work towards solving a problem or achieving a goal without repeating the same material over and over ( life history, theories, etc)
No, all stories don't have to have the hero saving the day, or getting the girl, to meet all the expect ions of readers...but if a writer puts forth a problem, he should at least address that issue in order to consider his goal achieved. By the time I finished this book, I nearly forgot what the heck it was supposed to be about. Forget the typos and other editing issues ( there were a lot) it was a disjointed effort to tell a story. This book was a lot like so many movies being made today, folks think if you offer fast car chases, things that blow up, fight scenes and add some sex then you've created a story...and that's just sad.

The Machine An Ethan Stone Thriller Book 1 edition by Tom Aston Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Had some potential, but hobbled by too many unbelievable and often pointless twists, poor character development, mind numbing passages, nonsensical dialog and when you get to the action...it ends too fast, as if the author decided to quit writing for the day and forgot to go back. Ethan Stone is probably the least likable, least believable and certainly least thrilling read in the last month. Pass on this one, but keep an eye on the author, he might get it right...
The plot of this book was great....loved it. But the author filled 3/4 of the book up with non essential information. So ok the author wanted us to know that he knew a bit about china, but come on....page after page of information that had nothing to do with the plot? I just kept skipping pages, but still knew what was happening with the plot! Also, the editing was terrible. Don't think I will be following this author.
This was a free book, thankfully. The plot was very interesting; character development could stand more depth. What was most annoying was the poor editing, or complete lack of it! The version of this book was loaded with typos, misspellings, poor grammar and over-struck words! As I read on a , my tendency is to highlight and note things that I find memorable, or need work. This book needs much help from an editor.
I started reading this with some high hopes..which were quickly dashed....It was just flat out boring...Half way thru I said .."No More" and deleted it....The characters had no depth...It was repetitive in many areas.....and just for me..The name Ying Ning drove me wild..All I can say is I wont try anything else by this man
I did enjoy the the story, but this book could have used a good editor. Dropped words and malapropisms abound, and things drag on in some places, especially at the island resort. Ethan Stone and the blonde newscaster are the only characters that are really fully formed. And I have to say this Peace Professor? Really? More plausible would be a soldier on disability running a website from his basement.
This was a very disappointing book.Top reviewer Bob says this was the 1st 5-star review he has given this year and compares Aston to Ludlum and Baldacci.I have to wonder if he was well paid for this review. If you don't know that Stone has gray eyes, you will know by the 5th time you are told.If you forget that Stone is out to revenge Hooper, don't worry,Aston will remind you in the next chapter, and the next, and the next.I was interested in whats up with Semyonov and the mysterious machine, but it wasn't worth the struggle to read the 2nd half of the book.
Get's bogged down. I followed the beginning of the story eagerly but the ex-special forces protagonist Ethan Stone doesn't seem very ex-Special Forces. Maybe I'm a bit spoiled by some of the over the top writing where the author is a bit tongue in cheek and takes some literary license with the amazing abilities of special forces/secret agents but this one seems to have swung completely to the opposite direction. He seems to be taken by surprise constantly, doesn't seem to display any street smarts at all, and about halfway through the book the storyline starts to seem like it's plodding along. Took a lot of tries for me to finish the book - admittedly I have a ton of books on my app and I typically read 8-12 books at a time, jumping back and forth between them, but this one had me forcing myself back to it just to get it finished. If you like your secret agents to be quite ordinary this may be the book for you, it did not do it for me.
